Baking soda
Optional toppings
(e.g., sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion, coarse salt)
Dough/Prep Directions
1
Combine warm water (¾ cup), sugar (1 ½ tsp), and yeast (2 ¼ tsp) in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until bubbly.
2
Add flour (2 ¼ cups), salt (1 tsp), and melted butter (1 Tbsp). Mix using a dough hook for 5 minutes until smooth.
3
Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
4
While you are waiting, I recommend pre-cooking the sausages (6), to make sure they get cooked all the way through. I personally like to use the oven or air fryer.
Assembly Directions
1
Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2
Boil water (12 cups) with baking soda (2 Tbsp) in a large pot.
3
Divide the dough into 6 pieces. Roll each into a 10-12 inch rope.
4
Wrap each dough rope around a sausage, sealing the ends.
5
Boil each wrapped sausage for 30 seconds, then place on a baking sheet.
6
Optional: Usually this is when an egg wash would be added, you can use a little butter and sprinkle with optional toppings.
7
Bake for 15 minutes or until deep golden brown.
